Cecilia Rodrigo (セシリア・ロドリーゴ Seshiria Rodorīgo?) is the monomaniac Flame Haze who appears in a side story called Verger, which takes place years before the main story. Her title is "Knitter of Thorned Gates" (荊扉の編み手 Keihi no Amite?).

Appearance[]

Cecilia is a woman around her twenties of Spanish descent wearing brown clothes and a white fur scarf, which she got as a present from Clemens Rott, her partner.

Personality[]

Cecilia only cares about herself and is driven by her own needs. The only person she deeply is interested in and yearns for is Clemens. She will attack anyone who touches her scarf — even her allies. When she wants something, she will be strict with it and has to possess it no matter how long or how many people would perish for her desire.

Background[]

Great War's Stray Child[]

Cecilia was one of many people who formed a contract with a Crimson Lord so that they could become Flame Haze in the fight against Töten Glocke in the Great War. She made an acquaintance with Clemens Rott during this war. During the war, she had been looked down due to her power, Alcázar's condition to cast and its function as a defensive spell. After it ended, Cecilia felt lost and was wandering alone until Clemens asked her to come with him. She started to develop feelings for him and wanted to know more about his past. But Clemens never told much about himself. The only thing he ever told her was about his hometown in Austria and a certain thing buried there.

They accidentally encountered a Crimson Lord named Ōnamuchi and lost in the battle. Their paths crossed many times after that. Ōnamuchi, first looked down on their weakness, started to accept and enjoy their battles after the pair had more experience and got stronger every time they fought. Eventually, in the last decisive fight, Clemens pushed Cecilia down from the cliff in order to save her life. He was killed by Ōnamuchi who wondered whether he follows and kills her or not. Clemens gave his last request to his nemesis and perished.

Plot[]

To Obtain the Memento of Him[]

Saddened by his death, Cecilia tries to go to the village where Clemens once lived to acquire his memento, which she calls it her "treasure". She is stopped by Ōnamuchi, who in turn follows Clemens' last request to "keep Cecilia away from getting the memento no matter what". Cecilia tries many times to get to the village but fails. She later goes to Outlaw and requests for assistance. Many Flame Haze are killed in four attempts. In the fifth time, Pietro Monteverdi sends one of the newly contracted Flame Haze (having an introduction letter from his former commander, Sophie Sawallisch) to assist her; she is the Flame Haze of the Nietono no Shana.

Celicia uses the young Flame Haze as the bait and imprisons her along Ōnamuchi with her Unrestricted Spell, Alcázar. She finally reached the village and obtains a wooden box containing the memento. But when she is about to identify what the memento is, she is cut in half by the pursuing Ōnamuchi without realizing what is in the box.

After her death, the Flame Haze of the Nietono no Shana discovered what is inside: the votive frog for a safe delivery. It could be speculated that Clemens once married and his wife was having a baby, which he didn't want Cecilia to know.

Powers and Abilities[]

Unrestricted Spells[]

Alcázar (アルカサル Arukasaru?): Cecilia's defensive-type Unrestricted Spell. It creates non-substantial leaves and branches which, when entwined with any object, highly strengthens it. These leaves and branches also devour the enemy's flame to strengthen themselves; only stronger power will destroy this untouchable wall.

Trivia[]

  • Interestingly, Cecilia means "the way for the blind" which somehow fits her personality: blindly searching for her beloved partner's memento and only caring about herself.
  • Her surname is a homage to a famous Spanish composer, Joaquín Rodrigo. Rodrigo almost lost his sight from an illness during his childhood, which can be related to the name Cecilia. Moreover, he has a daughter named Cecilia.[1]
